Hockey: National Sport

Montreal, Thursday, February 6, 2025 – It is with immense pride and great joy that we welcome the introduction of the bill by Mathieu Lacombe, Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister Responsible for Youth, to make hockey Quebec's national sport. This initiative, spearheaded by the government of François Legault, reflects the importance and unique place that hockey holds in the hearts of Quebecers.
Hockey isn't just a sport to us; it's a true passion, a central part of our culture and identity. For generations, it has brought families together, created friendships, and shaped the citizens of tomorrow. Officially recognizing hockey as our national sport is a significant step that values our sporting and cultural heritage.
« We would like to thank the government for this recognition and for its commitment to the development of hockey in Quebec. We hope that this initiative will encourage even more young people to take up this wonderful sport and make it an integral part of their lives. »
- Stéphane Auger, general manager of Hockey Quebec
Hockey Québec continues its work to promote hockey at all levels, with a focus on accessibility, inclusion, safety, and talent development. Together, let's ensure that hockey continues to shine and thrive in our beautiful province.
